Day 2 — Rocky Mountain National Park

Time change: Clocks fall back 1 hr on I-70 in far western Kansas, near Goodland.

Plan ahead: Reservation required — book at the release time: RMNP uses timed-entry vehicle reservations in summer (recreation.gov), in two tiers (park-wide and the Bear Lake Road corridor). Additional tickets are released on June 20, 2026 at 7:00 PM MDT — be online and ready to book the moment they drop.

Day 5 — Craters of the Moon National Monument

Plan ahead: Cave permit is free but required, and screening is for white-nose syndrome (don't bring gear/clothes used in other caves).

Day 6 — Nez Perce National Historical Park

Time change: Clocks fall back 1 hr at Lolo Pass on US-12 (Montana/Idaho line).

Day 14 — Glacier National Park

Time change: Clocks spring ahead 1 hr at Lookout Pass on I-90 (Idaho/Montana line).

Day 17 — Rushmore + Wind Cave + Badlands

Time change: Clocks spring ahead 1 hr on I-90 between Kadoka and Murdo, SD.

Plan ahead: Rushmore parking is $10/vehicle and NOT covered by the America the Beautiful pass (it's a concession fee).

Plan ahead: Wind Cave reality check: the cave is by guided tour only, tickets via recreation.gov, and summer tours sell out days ahead. No pre-booked late-morning ticket = take Plan B. Your instinct to skip is sound — Plan A works only if everything cooperates.
